It’s been quite a year for FJI, and we want to thank you for all the support that has made our work possible. While we mourned the loss of our dear friend and founder, Randy Berg, we continue to celebrate his life by advancing the work that he started. Some of this year’s accomplishments include:
- We filed a class action lawsuit against the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) challenging the confiscation of millions of dollars of digital music from incarcerated people in Florida.
- We secured a final order in our ongoing hepatitis C litigation, requiring the FDC to test, monitor, and treat every incarcerated person with the disease.
- With our partners at the Southern Poverty Law Center and Florida Legal Services, we filed a class action lawsuit challenging Florida’s overuse of solitary confinement in the adult prison system, and secured an order allowing the case to proceed.
- With those same partners, we filed a class action lawsuit challenging the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s use of solitary confinement on incarcerated children, and secured an order recognizing that the Constitution requires those children to be treated differently than adults.
- With our partners at Disability Rights Florida and Morgan & Morgan, we filed a lawsuit against the FDC for breaching the settlement agreement requiring the agency to make prisons accessible for people with physical disabilities.
We’re also hiring a paralegal to work on our prison litigation and criminal justice reform efforts.
We would not have been able to accomplish all this without your support. But we still need your help. We hope you can continue your support with a contribution to our cause. With your help, we look forward to another year of advancing justice.
Thank you, and Happy New Year!
