FJI Sues Lake City Over Ordinance Restricting Requests for Donations at Intersections

The Florida Justice Institute has filed a lawsuit against the City of Lake City over ordinance that restricts requests for donations at certain intersections. The ordinance prohibits
pedestrians from standing, soliciting, or leafletting on Lake City’s four principal roads and at least twenty intersecting roads. FJI represents the Cosac Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation that solicits donations and distributes newspapers in Lake City. As the result of the City’s adoption and enforcement of the Ordinance, Cosac has been hindered in the exercise of its First Amendment rights, faces a continuing threat of citation and fines for solicitation activities, and has suffered damages. The suit seeks an immediate end to the enforcement of the ordinance, damages, and attorneys’ fees.
