FJI has sent a letter to FDC on behalf of an incarcerated person, advocating for him to receive the most up to date form of medication treatment for treating Opioid Use Disorder. The individual filed a pro se lawsuit while in jail awaiting sentencing, contending that he would not receive the proper treatment when transferred to FDC custody. The case was dismissed an unripe, and FJI stepped in to advocate for him to receive the proper treatment. Through this process, FJI learned that the written FDC policy only permitted the use of medication Vivitrol, but not permitting the medication Suboxone (Buprenorphine), which is the accepted medication for certain forms of OUD to avoid the very serious and debilitating of withdrawal. FJI learned that the policy is being reviewed and potentially revised, and continues to monitor this issue closely.
