Florida-based legal aid organizations Southern Legal Counsel (SLC) and Florida Justice Institute (FJI) reached a settlement of their federal lawsuit challenging a St. Johns County ordinance passed in May 2023 in an effort to stop panhandling. The settlement results in a payment of damages and attorneys’ fees, as well as the County agreeing to not enforce the ordinance against the plaintiffs. This case is part of FJI’s larger effort to stop the criminalization of poverty.
