FJI, on behalf of an incarcerated man with a serious and debilitating hernia, filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Corrections and Corizon (the private prison medical provider), seeking to secure an immediate surgery to repair his hernia. A motion for preliminary injunction was filed, and a hearing was held in Tallahassee in September 2014 before Judge Robert L. Hinkle. At the conclusion of the hearing, the defendants agreed to have our client evaluated for hernia surgery, which he received shortly thereafter.
The case was finally settled for a total of $90,000, including attorneys’ fees and costs. This represents one step in FJI’s commitment to ensuring that all incarcerated people in Florida receive the medical care they are entitled to.
