An inmate who contacted FJI suffered from an extremely painful condition that can be cured by a simple surgery. However, despite years of requests, the FDOC refused to approve a visit to a surgeon for a consult. FJI sent a letter to the FDOC reminding them that failure to treat an inmate’s severe pain is a violation of the Eighth Amendment, and demanding an immediate consult. Several weeks later, the FDOC responding by approving the surgical consult, and the inmate eventually received his surgery. This is one small step toward FJI’s mission of ensuring that all incarcerated people throughout Florida are provided with timely and adequate medical care.
